Buscan legalizar la posesión de perros pit bull

Diversos sectores favorecieron un proyecto cameral que tendría el efecto de eliminar la prohibición de poseer, adquirir, criar, vender y traspasar perros de la raza pit bull en Puerto Rico.
El proyecto ya fue aprobado en la Cámara y ahora está ante la consideración del Senado. Hoy es considerado en una vista pública de la Comisión de Agricultura.
Tanto el Departamento de Agricultura como el Colegio de Médicos Veterinarios de Puerto Rico favorecieron el proyecto por entender que es discriminatorio prohibir específicamente una raza de perros.
“En la gran mayoría de las jurisdicciones estatales se regula de forma escrita la posesión del animal sin vulnerar los derechos propietarios de los ciudadanos”, dijo el secretario de Agricultura, Carlos Flores.
Walter Colón Lilley, presidente del Colegio de Médicos Veterinarios dijo en una ponencia escrita que en vez de prohibirse una raza particular deben promoverse “el registro y vacunación de mascotas”, así como la esterilización.
“Este colegio se reafirma en su oposición en medidas discriminatorias en contra de raza alguna de perros domésticos. Múltiples entidades interesadas en el bienestar del animal se han manifestado similarmente a favor de medidas que procuran revocar provisiones discriminatorias de la Ley 70”, afirmó.
Los deponentes mencionaron que hay otras leyes que deben ser derogadas para que la posesión de estos perros pueda ser completamente legal en la Isla.
